The Batman was originally slated to hit theaters on June 25, 2021, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film’s release was rescheduled for October 1, 2021. However, after a crew member contracted COVID-19 in September 2020, the film was forced to pause production and the theatrical release date was once again moved. The movie is now set to come out on March 4, 2022.

Pattinson plays the titular role and will be joined by Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler and an almost completely unrecognizable Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin.

The cast is rounded out by Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson and Barry Keoghan as a mysterious Arkham Asylum prisoner.

If fans stay until the very end of the credits of The Batman, they will get a little treat for their patience — but it's not anything that teases a sequel.

Reeves is behind the camera for The Batman. He got his start as the cocreator of the WB series Felicity before going on to direct Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its sequel, War for the Planet of the Apes.

The latest Caped Crusader film is an origin story that is “very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale,” Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter in January 2019, adding that he hopes the story “will be thrilling but also emotional.”

The plot of the film was kept tightly under wraps, but the Let Me In director said his movie is “more [about] Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films.” He added, “[Batman is] supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Viewers might forget that it's Farrell until the credits roll, but this is a real picture of the Irish actor in full makeup and prosthetics as the mobster.

In the first trailer for the film, Batman is being terrorized by the Riddler, who some fans suspect is inspired by the Zodiac Killer — and not just because they both have a thing for puzzles. Leaked images of Dano in character show him wearing a mask and clear glasses, which look similar to the getup worn by the infamous serial killer who terrorized Northern California in the ‘60s.

When Kravitz auditioned for the Catwoman role, she wanted to keep things real with her director. “It was important to give him an idea of what it’s really like to work with me,” she told Another Mag in September 2021. “To say what I really think and, if we’re on set together, to ask the questions I want to ask. I tried to come at it from the angle where I am showing him what I see and feel about this character. I believe that’s why it happened and I got the role.”

The High Fidelity alum reportedly beat out Joker’s Zazie Beetz and Baby Driver’s Eiza Gonzalez for the part.

After seeing a sneak peek of the film, Pattinson let fans know they’re in for a treat. “I’ve seen some of the movie now and it’s kind of really cool,” he told Variety in September 2021. “It’s really cool.”

Ahead of DC’s FanDome event, Reeves teased the first look at Kravitz’s character, Selina Kyle.

“Meet Selina Kyle… See more of her tomorrow at #DCFanDome #Tomorrow #TheBatmanTrailer #TheBatman,” he tweeted on October 15.

Kravitz told Variety in November 2021 that she'd "seen a little" of the film's final product — and she was floored by Pattinson's performance. "Rob is perfect for this role. He was incredible. His transformation was out of this world," she said. "[Director] Matt Reeves has a lot of heart, and he cares so much for these characters. I'm just very excited for him to be able to go on vacation because he deserves it. I hope the fans love it because we put a lot of work into this."

“When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’,” Reeves told Empire in December 2021. “That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor."

The director added that Pattinson had "that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”

"Something In The Way" is featured multiple times in the final cut of the movie.

In a trailer released in late December 2021, titled "The Bat and the Cat," Kravitz's character, Catwoman, gets more screen time. "If we don't stand up, no one will," she tells Batman while they appear to discuss The Riddler.

The caped crusader notes that she has quite a few cats in her home, and they're not the only thing she claims to have multiples of. When Batman says, "Don't throw your life away," she replies, "Don't worry, honey. I've got nine of 'em."

The feline-friendly vigilante seems to have no problem with facing danger. "Let's get into some trouble," she tells Pattinson's character.

Unlike most Batman adaptations, which portray Bruce Wayne as suave and confident, Pattinson has a more depressing take on the character. "He’s kind of a weirdo as Bruce and a weirdo as Batman," the Good Time star told GQ in February 2022. "In this, it’s sort of implied that he’s had a bit of a breakdown."

And it's not just Batman who's a bit dreary this time around: "It’s a sad movie," Pattinson later added. "It’s kind of about him trying to find some element of hope, in himself, and not just the city. Normally, Bruce never questions his own ability; he questions the city’s ability to change."

Selina calls her roommate "baby" in the film — and later uses the same term of endearment for Batman. Kravitz said that she assumed Selina and her pal Annika were more than friends.

“That’s definitely the way I interpreted that, that they had some kind of romantic relationship,” Kravitz told Australian outlet Pedestrian when asked if the character was bisexual.

Reeves, however, revealed that he didn't necessarily have the same vision. "So I don’t think we meant to go directly in that way, but you can interpret it that way for sure," he told Pedestrian in a separate interview with the Aussie website. "[Catwoman] has an intimacy with that character, and it’s a tremendous and deep caring for that character, more so than a sexual thing, but there was meant to be quite an intimate relationship between them.”
