How prestigious is the Journal of Student Research? ›

How selective/prestigious is the Journal of Student Research (JSR)? We rate it as moderately selective. Around 65% of all our students who submit to the Journal of Student Research get published, which is higher than most other journals where our students submit their research.

The typical number of papers a PhD student should publish varies depending on the field and university requirements. However, a common benchmark is about 3 papers published or accepted for publication in reputable journals during the course of their PhD program.

Getting research published is a time-consuming task. It can take months for journals to get back to you with a rejection, which makes it all the more frustrating. But don't give up, keep on trying and you will improve your ability and your chances.

Gold open access journals tend to have higher acceptance rates than other open access models, but these also tend to be the youngest journals. No relationship between the breadth of a journal's scope and the acceptance rate.

A political science student that published three manuscripts by their graduation date was in the third quartile (75th percentile). Psychology students published the most of all four disciplines of interest, averaging 8.4 publications, about half of which (4.1) were first/ solo authored.

Simply put the answer is no, you do not need to have published papers to apply to a PhD.

What is a good h-index for a PhD student? It is very common for supervisors to expect up to three publications from PhD students. Given the lengthy process of publication and the fact that once the papers are out, they also need to be cited, having an h-index of 1 or 2 at the end of your PhD is a big achievement.

Submitting an academic paper for publication (and potentially getting it accepted) does not require any qualifications whatsoever.

What are the odds of becoming a published author? ›

Within the book publishing industry, it is agreed that the odds of an author getting their work published stands between 1% and 2%. Despite this low number, more than 95% of manuscripts received by publishers and agents are below the level the standard required.

We looked at over 2,300 journals (more than 80% of them published by Elsevier), and calculated that the average acceptance rate was 32%. The range of acceptance was from just over 1% to 93.2%.

As a PhD student, you are likely to be required to read hundreds of research articles and papers as part of your studies. Reviewing this literature can be time-consuming and overwhelming, but there are ways to make it more manageable.

The NRMP data shows that students who have published articles in peer-reviewed journals have a higher chance of matching into a surgical residency program.

The short answer is: No. Publications are not required, and not having a publication won't compromise your chances of being accepted to med school. That said, research is a key extracurricular for medical school admissions, and having a publication will elevate the strength of your research experience to another level.
