What level of trauma is Cape Fear Valley? ›

It is a Level III Trauma Center with robust hospitalist service, interventional cardiology 24/7, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, etc. The facility is Chest Pain and Stroke accredited. The EMS system is hospital owned and managed with an award winning paramedic program.

The name comes from the 1585 expedition of Sir Richard Grenville. Sailing to Roanoke Island, his ship became embayed behind the cape. Some of the crew were afraid they would wreck, giving rise to the name Cape Fear. It is the fifth-oldest surviving English place name in the U.S.

Cape Fear Valley is the 8th largest health system in the state with 916 patient beds, serving a six-county region of Southeastern North Carolina and more than 935,000 patients annually.

Level one is for the most serious injuries, which require fast response times. Other trauma levels could transfer to a higher level after evaluation.

The Cape Fear River serves as one of North Carolina's most important natural resources and supplied the first highway into the heart of the state since its initial discovery in 1524. The Lower Cape Fear Region was home to aboriginals, now known as the Cape Fear Indians, prior to occupation of English settlers.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center provides comprehensive care of sick newborns. It is staffed 24 hours a day by experienced nurses, respiratory therapists and neonatal nurse practitioners. All care is supervised by board-certified Neonatologists.

Cape Fear Valley is a private, not-for-profit health system governed by a 22-member Board of Trustees. The board includes all of the Cumberland County Commissioners, as well as Physicians, Registered Nurses, and various members of the community.

The cornerstone of Cape Fear Valley Hospital was laid in 1954, and the hospital opened in 1956 as a 200-bed county hospital. Today, the medical center is a robust regional medical center located in the growing metropolitan city of Fayetteville, N.C. (population 200,000) in Cumberland County (population 300,000).
