CNN is a large network with wide coverage, so alert them to leads or stories they haven’t reported on yet that are meaningful to a large number of people. Think like a journalist and consider whether your tip is valuable due to unusualness, humor, prominent figures or celebrities, or timeliness.^[6] Areas of interest could include:

   • Conflict: physical altercations, protests, or clashes of ideologies or politics
   • Human interest: stories that provoke an emotional response in the viewer
   • Wide impact: stories that directly affect large portions of the viewing audience (like a large storm closing down major roads in a region of the country)
   • Prominent figures: stories related to public figures, politicians, celebrities, monuments, or events that most people know and recognize
   • Timeliness: something that’s relevant to an ongoing story or current events
   • Proximity: tips with a local tie-in (CNN covers the whole world, but a European bureau might take higher interest in a European story, for example)
   • Humor: a story viewers will find funny (not all news has to be dire!)

   Report tips by phone to the Customer Service number at 404-827-1500. Follow the menu options to speak to a real person or to leave a message about your tip. Keep it short and sweet—leave your name, your tip or idea, and a way for a representative to contact you for more information.^[7]

   • Your message might say: “Hello, my name is Sally Jones. I think you should report on the environmental impact of a new factory in my hometown of Smithshire, NY. It’s having a negative effect on the water quality, but people are not aware of this. Call me back at 555-555-5555 for more information. Thank you!”

   Tweet @TeamCNN to send a tip via social media. Tag @TeamCNN in your tweet or send them a direct message about your news idea. Include any links, pictures or videos that may generate interest, and tag any relevant organizations or individuals related to the story. @TeamCNN represents Viewer Services and is the account most likely to respond to you.^[8]

   • Your tweet might say: “Hey @TeamCNN Please report on the water pollution problem in Smithshire, NY! People are getting sick!”
   • Tweet to a specific bureau or program if you think they’ll be more interested in your tip (for example, tweet @TeamHLN to reach Headline News directly).
   • Also try sending messages or leaving comments on CNN’s Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube accounts.

   Email tips to tips@cnn.com. State what topic your tip concerns in the subject line and include as much information in the body of the email as possible. Include the specific who, what, when, and where so the CNN team can correctly evaluate whether the story is newsworthy or not.^[9]

   • Attach any relevant photos, video clips, audio clips, or other media to the email.
   • Include your preferred method of communication if you don’t want CNN representatives replying to your email address.

   Submit an I-Report through the online submission form. An I-Report is a photo, video, audio file, or written text that describes a news story from your perspective. Navigate to the submission page and fill in the fields asking for your contact information, story details, and media uploads. If you’re away from your computer, email your media files to ireport@cnn.com from your phone or mobile device.^[10]

   • If you’re emailing, include the topic of the story in the subject and as much detail in the body of the email as possible.
   • Videos from Samsung D415 and Samsung E315 phones are incompatible with the CNN Exchange platform and can’t be uploaded.
   • I-Reports are uploaded straight to CNN through the CNN Exchange portal for evaluation.

   Send a message or make a call through WhatsApp or Signal. Call or text (646) 397-6705 to leave your tip on either app. WhatsApp saves a significant amount of data related to your communications, while Signal allows you to send “self-destructing” messages and media files if privacy or anonymity is a concern.^[11]

   Send a message through the SecureDrop submission system. Download the Tor browser, then launch it and wait for it to connect. Copy and paste http://cnn.securedrop.tor.onion directly into the Tor browser, then follow the instructions to submit your story.^[13]

   • Use the unique codename assigned to you after your first submission to sign back in, check for responses, and upload more materials.
   • SecureDrop uses the Tor network to obscure your IP address. It doesn’t track or log any metadata about your communications.

   Fill out CNN’s online feedback form to share ideas or concerns. Select the topic of your feedback from the first drop-down menu on the form, then fill in the remaining fields including your name, email address, and the comment box. Use this form to share ideas about what you want to see covered, make complaints about programming, call out errors, or make other comments to the network.^[14]

   • Some programs, like Headline News, do have their own unique feedback form.

   Contact CNN programs and personalities through their social media. Most CNN shows and anchors have their own accounts on Facebook or Twitter. Search Facebook or Twitter for the specific show or anchor you want to contact, then leave a post on their page, tweet at them, or send them a direct message.^[16]

   • Navigate to an anchor’s bio on CNN’s website and click the icons in the upper left corner of their profile to go to their Facebook or Twitter accounts.
   • If you wanted to contact Nancy Grace, for example, reach out to her on her Twitter account or send a message to her Facebook page.
